Saying Goodbye to Barley

Our beloved family member passed on May 26, 2021 after a year long and valiant battle with cancer.

Yesterday we made our tearful goodbyes to beloved Barley. He died peacefully in our arms while a full moon shone brilliantly over the hills of the Central Coast. His twelve years were a wonderful gift, and especially the last year, when we did not leave his side even once.
Barley lived life at full throttle. Every day until the very end joyful and exuberant. A loyal and loving friend, he would insist upon greeting us with bear hugs upon our return from even the briefest absence. He loved hiking, swimming while happily gulping at the water, and adventures in the car of any sort. He insisted upon both car windows being lowered, his head alternately out the left and right, even at 70 MPH. Rarely did he miss an opportunity to bark at the Los Osos bear statue when we passed by, and he similarly greeted livestock that grazed too close to the road. He measured his days with bursts of excitement, and would often would break into has stash of toys, proudly running them around the living room.
Today we are feeling a deep loss, his favorite leather chair empty, the house so quiet. We will miss his larger than life personality and his love for family. Our only solace; he is now free of pain, joyfully running trails and swimming in mountain lakes eternal.
